With prices rising we have some tips for you!

Fuel prices aside its always nice to decrease your fuel costs. Now more than ever we are squeezed at the pump. While we do offer a range of services that may assist in regaining those lost MPGs, we have some FREE tips for you on how to do so!

  1. Check your tire pressure

    • Having the pressure of your tires inflated to the PSI indicated on the placard on the drivers door frame of your vehicle can assist greatly in increasing your mileage. Also increasing the PSI by 2-3 may assist as well. This works by slightly decreasing the contact patch of the tire to create less rolling resistance. HOWEVER it is not recommended to use the PSI stamped on the tire nor to inflate past 5 over on the placard (LT tires and load carrying trucks are an exception). Doing so can dangerously decrease the contact patch of your tire decreasing your grip when you least expect it as well as cause abnormal tire wear.

  2. Cruise it!

    • If your vehicle has cruise control use it! We know in the mountains opportunities for that are slim but we can help our vehicle be more efficient by leaving earlier and not being in a hurry. You may work around the corner but those pedal to metal 3 miles will cost you in the long run. Take it easy and cruise keep that lead foot at home.

  3. Wash your vehicle

    • Most people would be surprised how much washing a vehicle can help fuel savings. Vehicles are tested in a wind tunnel for drag. As you drive any caked up dirt, snow, etc disrupt the air flow around your vehicle and cause drag making your vehicle consume more fuel. So rinse your vehicle off every so often. And if you treat it to a wax the savings will add up even more.

  4. Lighten the load

    • Always have tons of junk in your truck bed or trunk? Try seeing what you may be able to leave at home. The more weight your vehicle is carrying the more it has to lug around and the more fuel it uses.

While alone these tips may only increase your MPG by a fraction or at most 1-2 miles, them combined with a few of the preventative maintenance services at Mercer Automotive and Tire, can increase your MPG back to what the vehicle was when new. Some extra care now can save you money in the future.
